Exactly 50 years ago tonight, 92 classmates and I walked across a stage set up in the gym of Lonoke High School and became high school graduates.  My clearest memory of that day is that my friend Ed was absolutely sure that I would cry during graduation and I was sure that I wouldn't.  At the end as we all stood to file out of the gym, I leaned out so that Ed, who happened to be on the same row, could see my smile to assure him that I was NOT crying. It is ironic that today, 50 years later, thinking about that night almost brings me to tears.  Nostalgic tears!  The dictionary definition of nostalgic is "A sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations."  That perfectly describes how I feel when I think of our graduation day.

I have seen a post going around on Facebook with the simple question, 'If you had the chance, would you relive your high school years?"  The overwhelming answer to that on-line question has been NO.  For me, the answer would be no, unless I could somehow go back to high school with the wisdom I've learned over the last 50 years. I would be less worried about being popular and more worried about being kind and inclusive.  I would study harder and practice piano and flute more.  Just thinking of being with my Moma and Daddy in our little house on Depot Street gives me a wave of joy. I'd treasure them more, listen to them more, spend more time with them making memories.  Of course, going back isn't possible so all I can do is go forward filling my current life with kindness, hard work, and love so that I am making memories that my family will treasure.

What of the class of 1971?  Thanks to Pam Cordell Landis and the other good people who live in Lonoke and plan our reunions, we have had one every 5 years.  The reunions have kept us friends.  In fact, in some ways without the drama of high school, we are even better friends now.  I look forward to these reunions so much. I just love the compassionate, welcoming, fun adults we have become.

50 years ago when we walked across that stage we were innocents with no idea of where our lives would take us. We've gone to college, had careers, retired, gotten married, some have divorced, some have had children and grandchildren. Some have traveled far and wide while others have stayed close to home. Financial success has been the lot of some, while others have struggled. We've buried parents and siblings and spouses and, at an alarming rate, are now burying classmates.  (9 in the last 5 years).  That fact alone makes each reunion precious.

The words of the song that Tommy Smith sang at our graduation are much more appropriate for our class than we would have ever imagined as 17 or 18 year old kids.  As a member of the Class of 1971, I'll never have to walk alone even though I live thousands of miles away. I know I can always turn to the friends that I have known, literally all of my life and they will be there for me.

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

The Lonoke High School Alma Mater has a phrase, "When we leave you, we will grieve you.  You'll always be our greatest pride".  I'm proud to be a 1971 graduate of Lonoke High School.

Spa Days

Mary treated Monica and me to a spa day while she was here. It was so relaxing and such a generous gesture.  While, Monica, Mary and I loved it, Isabella was not happy.  She wanted her own spa day.

Naturally Grandma made that happen!

She loved it all  -from picking out her colors to the hand massage.
The foot massage made her giggle and giggle.
Guess who made an Amazon delivery while we were there???
I think we have started a new tradition! Grandma and Isabella spa day!!!
Notice that our little fashionista picked a nail color that matched her outfit perfectly!
But for our toes - sparkly pink!  Grandmas aren't too old for sparkles.
Monica sent me this photo of the spa, Isabella set up for her Barbie dolls! Oh how I love that little girl!!!

Passing on the Jumping Tradition

On Thanksgiving Day of 2018, for a reason that none of us can remember, we set up a thick mat at the bottom of our stairs and Isabella started jumping from the steps onto the blue mat.  She did this every time she came over to the house.  In February of 2019, we introduced stair jumping to Matt's friends' little girl, Addie and she loved it too.  I recently saw Addie's mom, Jessie, and she said that more than 2 years later, Addie still talks about jumping off the stairs at Matt's house.

On this visit, we decided it was time to introduce Jackson to the joy of jumping!  Boy did he love it, although we had to watch him carefully so that he didn't try jumping from the 5th or 6th stair like Isabella does. That will have to wait a year or two!

Isn't it funny how traditions are born and passed down???  I hope they will remember this forever!

We're going to the zoo!

On Mary and Jackson's last day with us we went to the Boise Zoo. It is the perfect size for a 2 year old and Jackson loved it.  Isabella and Monica were our tour guides since they have had zoo passes for several years.

For Jackson, it was his first zoo experience and his first carousel ride.

Isabella loved being the 'big cousin' and introducing Jackson to all the fun!
Sometimes he even let her push the stroller but most of the time he walked or insisted, as only a two year can,  that his Mommy push!  He is seldom a 'terrible two' but he does have his moments!!!!
Jackson was fascinated by all the animals!

Isabella always shows us where she was born -  Argentina.
Cutest little tiger ever!
I surely love these two and their wonderful mothers!

Afternoon in the Mountains

I had told Matt, John and George that what I really wanted to do for Mother's Day was to go up the canyon on Saturday, cook tin foil dinners and make s'mores and play in the river.  And I got exactly what I wished for!!!!

Tin foil dinners

S-mores
Lots of play time
Plenty of 'stick and rock throwing in the river' time
Time to climb rocks with uncles and make Mommy really nervous

'Little boy heaven time" with rocks and sticks and dirty faces!

A wise friend once told me that everything with your family won't be perfect but that you will have perfect days....and this was one of them!

Celebration

The Mother's Day fun just never stopped!

Uncle Matt borrowed this totally cool dump truck and a large inflatable slide.  Uncle of the year!  He also agreed to babysit so that sweet Mary could treat Monica and me to a spa day!

Jackson loves trucks so this was a big hit!

Matt is just great with kids.  He and Jackson worked hard cleaning up the yard by putting sticks and pine cones in the back of the dump truck then dumping them.
I LOVE having a crowd around my table!
Boise and Eagle have great parks and we explored several!

Jackson loved the ducks that would come and eat in our yard.  "Daddy duck, Mommy Duck...."
Although it never got warm enough to use the waterslide feature of the slide it was still fun.
The Lewis brothers and a soccer ball in the backyard....so many memories!

And of course we had to have bubbles....it's a tradition!
Seeing my two grandkids together makes me so happy!
Isabella was somewhat concerned about all the mess in our living room and proclaimed, "Jackson, you need to learn to put away your toys!"

My Mom & Grandma heart was happy all week!

Perfect Mother's Day!

For our Covid- 19 Mother's Day in 2020, it was just George, Matt and me enjoying the day together.  This year was full of wonderful surprises that made it a perfect day for me!

On Tuesday, the doorbell rang and there was Mary with adorable Jackson!  I was so happy!

Then on Friday night, Scott walked in!  Special thanks to Matt for keeping this secret and being the airport to our house chauffeur.

This Mom and Grandma was so happy to have many of the people I love the very most together to celebrate Mother's Day!
