This has been a very good week for us 'soccer nuts'! First FC Barcelona won the Spanish League again. That is 5 times in the last 7 years! Two more games and hopefully two more titles to go this season. First next Saturday, the King's Cup and then the next week the Champion's League. Força Barça!
I have to admit I'm a sucker for the photos of the guys and their adorable children posing with the trophy.
I can't imagine what it must be like to be out there on the pitch listening to 93,000 singing, chanting, happy fans. Most of the little ones seemed remarkably composed and like children everywhere were fascinated by the falling confetti and fireworks! Not all were thrilled though!
I guess winning the Spanish League isn't all that impressive to him!
Although the title made for a joyous day, it was also a bit sad as we bid farewell to a true legend, Xavi Hernandez who was leaving after 17 seasons with the first team. He has been with Barcelona since he was a little boy in the youth program. I am pretty confident he will be back some year as coach. I hope so because it seems that he is not only a fantastic soccer player but a really good man. With his first professional pay check from FC Barcelona, he bought his mother a toaster! He got emotional when speaking to the 93,000 fans chanting his name. I love that he said, "I am the happiest man in the world."
In his years with FC Barcelona (1998 - 2015) he was won 8 league titles, and 3 Champion's Leagues, plus numerous other titles. He was won more titles than any other Barcelona player ever. As I said he is a true legend and he will be missed.
While all this was happening in Europe, right in Boise, Idaho our own 'legend' Scott Lewis was also winning titles as one of the coaches of the U-16 boys!
Yep, another State Championship for Coach Scott! The first one this group of boys have ever won!
The high school team he helped coach in the fall also won the State Championship! Way to go Coach Scott! To make it even more fun, his good buddy and lifelong friend and soccer teammate Logan also coached a team, the U-15s and they won the State Championship also!
These two have come full circle with soccer in Boise, from little 6 year olds playing Recreational soccer to winning state championships themselves, to coaching State Champions! We couldn't be prouder! Now it is on the Far West Regional Tournament in Boise. Hopefully George and I will get to go over and see some games!
And thanks to big brother Matt for taking Mom's place as photographer!!!
