Another Saturday - another hike!

This week we hiked 4.5 miles with a 1950 ft. elevation gain to pretty little Jenny Lake. John was with us this time so Matt had a speedy hiking buddy. This week the black shaggy doggy decided to stay with the speedy group. George and I weren't so speedy. I told myself that I was hiking slow to be with George and I'm sure he told himself that he was hiking slow to stay with me! The only important part is that we made it. The old dog has hardly moved today. She wagged her tail when I came home from church, got up for a dog treat, and her dinner but other than that she has spent the day 'recuperating". George had his first church meeting at 6:00 a.m. so I'm not sure if he is recuperating from that or the nine mile hike.

The wildflowers were stunning and Johnny even did a little 'wildlife' photography!

Happy Father's Day!

For Father's Day this year I asked my children to share with me some of their memories of their Dad. I took their ideas and made a little Father's Day booklet for George.

I wanted to share an abbreviated & edited version of what they sent me.

Mary said: Once I started thinking I couldn't stop thinking of all the wonderful things dad has done with us over the years!!

We had the tradition that one parent would take a kid to do something special. When my turn came around, I decided I wanted to go see the movie “Father of the Bride” with dad. Dad and I went to see the movie and afterward I announced that I wanted a wedding like that! I believe that dad fell over backward when I made that announcement and his expression said it best. Luckily I had the wedding of my dreams, thanks dad!

Anytime dad sits at the piano and even today, I usually try and sit with him as he plays his song, I can't ever remember the name but I know the tune. In the old days dad would reach around me to hit certain notes and tickle me but the best part of sitting on that bench with dad at the piano is knowing how much he cares about us and that at anytime we can go to him for help. Love you dad!!

Matt said:The pinewood derby will always give me great memories of what an amazing dad you are. I remember wanting you to do the majority of the work so that it was that much more likely that I would win. The only work that you did was the saw, that I was too young to use, and helped me mount the wheels and weights. I think one of the things that sticks out the most in my mind is me wanting to be done sanding the car and you going over it and showing me the spots where I hadn't done as thorough a job. And even though I didn't take first place, the fact that you had given as much of the workload that was safe to me, made me feel better about coming in second.

It's funny now, but was not a laughing matter, when you learned the hard way that it wasn't a good idea to try and keep up with me on a mountain bike. I remember getting through that tougher section of trail and thinking that I had been lucky to make it unscathed going as fast as I had. The next thing I heard was bike tires sliding in the dirt and then a pretty loud groan like you had just gotten punched. By the time I made it back to you, you were as white as a ghost and in obvious pain. You kept your cool and I would have never guessed that you had actually broken something. Now, after I have suffered the same injury, it reinforces how level headed and patient of a father you really were. In that kind of pain I could see myself really laying into the person that was somewhat to blame the fact that I had fallen.

Johnny said: One story I like is when we played the car game when we were driving around Europe. We would each take turns saying, I get the 11th car that passes. And we would count and we always got nice BMW’s and Porsches, then after a while dad said he wanted to play so he said he gets the 5th car that passes. And we counted # 1 BMW # 2 Ferrari # 3 Porsche # 4 BMW. And then #5 came around the corner and it was a farm truck with barrels of hay.

Things I love about Dad:

1. He always seems to know the answer to everything.

2. He almost never yells or gets really angry.

3. He has a positive outlook and never shows his disappointment.

4. He is calm and relaxed

5. He loves soccer

6. He’s always there to help with any problem

7. During trips he always tried his best to give us what we wanted, etc. ice cream, boating

8. He’s a hard worker

9. If his computer chair came to life it would thank him for all the use.

Scott said: One of my best memories of Dad was when he baptized me. I was very nervous beforehand, especially when they opened up the wall to the baptismal font so that everyone could see. Dad's words were so peaceful and I remember feeling very calm during the baptism. I will never forget that experience. Another of my best memories of dad and me was when we went to Bordeaux for the World Cup game. I remember how small the plane was from Barcelona. I had never been on a plane so small. The bus ride from the hotel to the game was crazy. There were Croatians chanting and the bus was entirely full. I remember the first thing that I noticed once we were inside was that all the Romanian players had bleached their hair, so they all looked like me. Even though the game was only 1-0, it was very entertaining. I think my best memory of that trip was the train ride home. It was great seeing the French countryside while talking with dad, even though I had my Nintendo and played it all the time. But all in all, it was a great trip.

Marilyn said: This picture of George really says it all for me. Notice that he is carrying my backpack and holding my big drink and posing for a picture when he didn't want to. He is always willing to help me with anything from a computer problem to reaching something on a high shelf to helping me with YW stuff. He is a great husband and Dad to our children. I love you!

More's Mountain Trail

George, Matt, & I decided to take the dog on a little hike today so we headed up to Bogus Basin and hiked the More's Mountain Trail. What a fun day we had in the beautiful mountains!

Our twelve year old dog enjoyed most of the hike but she still hates the camera! She also didn't like being the trail blazer when there was new growth on the trail. I guess we can add 'bears' to the long list of things she is afraid of!
Does she know that there might be bears in the brush? Maybe it is instinctive!

She also didn't want to go under the big tree that had fallen across the trail but when I crossed over she decided that she had to be where I was so she came under.
Matt enjoyed showing us the places where he likes to climb. I am sure he won't be getting his Dad or me to rope up and climb up there anytime soon...or anytime ever!
All of us from the geriatric dog to the geriatric parents had a great time....and Matt put up with our lack of speed very graciously!

Happy Birthday bags!

Tonight for our Young Women activity we put together birthday bags for the Salvation Army. They give these to underprivileged families to help them celebrate their children's birthdays
.
The girls came up with clever birthday cards.

Then we put one or two of the cards, a cake mix, cake pan, icing, candles, birthday hat and noise maker in a decorated bag & tied it with ribbon. Instant birthday celebration!

When it rains....it still floods!

We were paying close attention to our patio drainage during this torrential downpour so we noticed the water slowly rising.
Before it came into the house again we tried bailing.......

We tried using a pick ax to clean out our drain......
But finally a trip to Home Depot for a pump gave us a good fix until we get a better permanent drain.

When I went inside Matt got up on the roof in the pouring rain to clean out the gutters. When I asked, "Why didn't you call me, those would have been great pictures?" George & Matt replied almost in unison, "Because we don't want to be on your blog!!!" Sorry guys! The hanging from the roof in the rain pictures would have been so much more exciting!

I just read over this post and laughed at how I said, "We tried bailing....we tried a pick axe" and implied that we went to Home Depot. George says I was using the royal 'we' because to be honest, all I did was take pictures and go inside to scrapbook! I'm sure it was a great father son bonding experience!

Girlfriends

Aren't girlfriends wonderful? Our little group celebrates all our birthdays with lunch and gifts. Girlfriends think of such clever things to give. Our husbands are all wonderful but they would never come up with gifts like cute table runners, fun jewelry, summer tableware for the patio, & bright scarves in the winter! Plus we get laughs over the hilarious cards for women 'of a certain age'! I love my friends!

Dogs can pout

Did you know that dogs can pout? This poor little girl wasn't allowed into the living room where all the potential petters were sitting. Don't you feel sorry for her?

I tried making a smilebox!

Do I have to love a flood?

This is getting ridiculous!  When I said my motto for 2009 was going to be "come what may and love it", I was thinking that just the normal problems of life would come....not death and unemployment and floods!

We were at a friend's house for games on Saturday when we got a frantic call from Scott.  Our downstairs patio was flooding the basement.  We had a torrential downpour and the drainage system that had worked perfectly well for the last 9 years didn't do the job and water was pouring into the house.   The carpet was soaked in one area despite the heroic efforts of Scott & Matt. So today we have a disaster clean up crew at our house.  It could have been worse because none of the furniture was affected.  Just the carpet and the baseboards.  I do love that part!

Notice the lovely holes bored into the wall behind the baseboards.

We have to have these huge "air movers' not fans going for 3 full days and nights.  It sounds like we are living on an airport runway!  Oh well...come what may!

Legacy

Early Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m. I took 5 sleepy 15 & 16 year old girls to the mountains for a two day experience called "Legacy". Keep in mind that this was the first day of summer vacation & they had all been to end of the year parties or concerts the night before so 7:00 was EARLY!  Legacy is an annual event  put on by our church, planned by a committee of girls (including one girl from our Ward who left for Legacy at 6:00 a.m.), and run by a group of dedicated unpaid women leaders.  We did service projects, had a fashion show, listened to talks, played silly games, ate so much good food that I may never recover, and made up wacky skits. We also read scriptures, wrote in journals, made goals, and were reminded of who we really are.  Most importantly the girls got to know themselves  and their Savior better as they contemplated the theme, "What Heaven Sees in You".

One of my girls commented that she was starting the summer on a spiritual high.  I feel the same.  The Young Women theme that we repeat each Sunday says in part, "We will stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places as we strive to live the Young Women's values which are faith, divine nature, individual worth, knowledge, choice & accountability, good works, integrity, and virtue".  My girls (I guess I can call them my girls) really do stand as witnesses and I love them all!  They are the perfect mixture of silly fun, spirituality, kindness, acceptance & they do live those values.  I'm lucky to associate with them!!!  And I know that Heaven sees such beauty & potential in them.

Here's a more serious pose with our wonderful Bishop!

And one more so that you can see how beautiful they are....even after two days with no showers, make up,  curling irons or blow dryers, and suffering from cell phone withdrawal!

FYI - Legacy stands for Laurels Experience Greater Appreciation for Christ in their Youth!

Come what may and love it

Last fall I heard an unforgettable talk by one of our church leaders entitled "Come What May and Love it".  This wonderful man, Joseph Wirthlin passed away shortly after our semi annual general conference in October of 2008.  When I was setting goals for 2009 I decided to make "come what may and love it" my motto for the year.  Whew I had no idea what 2009 would bring!  I'm trying and occasionally succeeding in loving the changes in my life this year!
So come what may and love it!!

If you want to hear this remarkable talk, look here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVNYhcYEwIE
