Magical Architecture

When a friend asked me where we went on our recent trip and I replied 'Central Asia' , he looked puzzled and said, "Why?"  Well for the adventure of course....and to see some of the most stunning Islamic architecture in the world. 

Arches and tiles and minarets....just beautiful! 

Can you find the verses from the Koran which are written in Arabic in the tiles? 

My calendar had a photo of this square with the following quote

These sights were truly magical!  I felt like I had been transported to the set of "Aladdin".

Several of us mentioned that we hoped Heaven would look like this. 

Yes, that is gold leaf.  

Spectacularly beautiful!  

During the Soviet times the mosques were not used for religious purposes but the buildings were  preserved for their architectural value.  Renovations were ongoing.  As you can see,  this minaret needs some tile replacements. 

 This was in the harem area.  Arches and domes...two of my favorite features.
