Northern Lights in Idaho

Normally Boise is too far south to see the Aurora Borealis but on May 10th all the forecasts, including the Aurora App we had loaded to our phones when we were in Iceland, indicated that there was a very good possibility that they would be visible.  A large geomagnetic storm made it possible.  Now if the clouds would cooperate and stay away, we knew there was a good chance that we would see them.

And the skies stayed clear!

After driving about 20 miles up into the mountains to the little town of Horseshoe Bend along with 100s of others, we pulled off onto a view point turnout and waited for the show to begin. About 11:00 we noticed a sort of haze in the sky, almost like clouds. Gradually the colors became more obvious.  You should know that the colors are much brighter when looking through a camera lens.

We left about 12:00 when things appeared to be slowing down. How I wish we had stayed longer!

John, Monica and Isabella were also in Horseshoe Bend. As they were driving home, John noticed really bright lights in the distance so they drove over in that direction and were treated to a fabulous display.

Their photos were amazing, including this one - which is my favorite!

Thank you Mother Nature for painting our Idaho skies so beautifully!

Where I've lived

Every place I have ever lived has been wonderful.

In doing a quick count of the places I have called home, I realized that I lived in Arkansas, New York, Rhode Island and Maryland before I was 6 years old.  Then two years in Sicily

After that the count goes:

10 years in Lonoke, Arkansas

2 years in Mississippi

2 years in Utah

13 years in Colorado

1 year in California

5 years in Barcelona, Spain

8 years in Oregon

But the place I've called home for the longest time is Boise, Idaho. 21 years - divided between 1988 - 1995; 2000-2008; 2018 to 2022.

Each of these places has something I loved.  Arkansas was home to my ancestors for many years. My roots are there.  Mississippi was where I learned to be independent from my parents and made so many life long friends.  Utah is where I met my husband.  Colorado was our 1st home as a couple and as a family of 6.  California is where we become parents for the first time. The years in Barcelona changed us all completely.  Oregon introduced us to some amazing people and where we became involved with Kenya Keys.  Here in Idaho we learned to expect the unexpected like seeing Santa riding his horse on Christmas Eve!

What will the future hold?  More places to call home?
More people to meet?  More adventures?
More learning? More challenges?

Bring on 2023.  The year I turn 70!

Scott's In Town

The pandemic has made it really difficult for Scott to visit us or us to visit him.  He works for Starbucks and for much of the last year, the rule was that if you went out of state, you couldn't come in to work for 2 weeks, didn't get paid and had to find people to cover your shifts so we haven't seen our boy since last June.  This was the first Christmas we weren't together.  We were overjoyed when he arranged time off and came to spend a week with us.  Yeah!

On John's day off, we spent a fun day at Celebration Park on the Snake River.  Unfortunately George had meetings at work and couldn't join us.

The 'iffy' Idaho spring weather cooperated and we enjoyed a fun picnic before our hike.
Monica and I stopped about half way up the mountain.  The moment called for a Lewis Family selfie!
Matt, John, Scott and Isabella kept climbing up the very steep trail.

And they all made it to the top!
Our little Isabella is tough and fearless!
Monica spotted a coyote while we were waiting.  Immediately after she saw it we heard a lot of bird noises so I suspect the coyote was hunting chukars. As the guys hiked down, they tried  to see if they can catch a glimpse. No luck though.
I have to brag a bit on Isabella!  She never complained about being tired and just kept right on going up and up the 'big mountain'!  Monica and Johnny have done an excellent job with her.  She is always happy and smiling. And posing for photos!!!!
Uncle Scott couldn't resist doing a little posing with her!

We're all happy when Scott comes to town!

Seeing Idaho!

We moved to Idaho in 1988 - 32 years ago.  Of those 32 years, we lived 5 years in Barcelona and 8 years in Portland but still that's 24 years living in Boise.  Well my census job has taken me to places in this beautiful state that I had never seen before.  In August, I saw much of northern Idaho.  This last week I've explored closer to home in two counties right by us, Elmore and Camas Counties and I've gone places that I've never gone before.

For 3 days, I was Fairfield population around 500.  Even though it is a lot smaller than Lonoke, where I grew up, it still made me feel nostalgic for small towns.  People were super friendly and helpful and knew a lot about their neighbors.  That makes census work a lot easier.  By the 3rd day I felt like I had made friends all over town.

Saturday I drove for two hours to an even smaller town called Prairie.  The drive was spectacular as it follows the Boise River Canyon.
I didn't take this beautiful photo.

It was smoky from the nearby fires when I drove up there so my views were more like this...
On this little dirt road, the sign that said, "Watch for Stock" was necessary.  This cow was very interested in me.  Some of his friends were standing right on the road, so I am glad I was 'watching out'.

I finally got a photo of some of the wild turkeys.
Yesterday I went to Pine and Featherville, two more small towns.  The drive was also beautiful!
There were fires in the area but actually I think it was smokier in Boise than where I was.
The fire was about 6 miles from the towns I visited.  Before I headed up there, I stopped at the corral which was right at the turn off, to get advice from the cowboys.  They assured me that where I was going was perfectly safe.  You have to trust an Idaho cowboy! And they were right.  I had no trouble at all.
I did see the fire fighter base.
And I found the 'Church in the Valley by the Wildwood' that I had sung about when I was a child.
I enjoyed lunch at this beautiful spot.  While I was eating I noticed a large bald eagle and watched him swoop down and catch a fish right out of the river!
Idaho is close to finished with the 2020 Census.  We might be there first state in the nation to finish!  Yeah Idaho!  Louisiana and West Virginia are not far behind though, so it is back out on the road tomorrow to try and finish up Elmore County.  We really hope to be #1 in the USA to complete the count.  Every time I get frustrated with some of the organization and bureaucracy of the Census Bureau, I remind myself that getting an accurate count of 330 million people is no small feat!

Shoshone Falls

We took a Saturday day trip to Twin Falls to see Shoshone Falls in all her springtime glory. Wonderful day!

Monica got a little taste of home when we ate at the Patagonia Restaurant - an Argentine Restaurant that had been recommended to her.
The empanadas didn't disappoint.
After lunch we drove to the falls. There is an impressive amount of water going over this spring!
The last time Johnny and Monica saw the falls, there wasn't nearly as much water.  I just love that their little family is always going out and having adventures.  I'm glad that occasionally we get to go along as well.
Isabella's favorite thing was rock climbing!
She was very impressed with herself!
I think she must have inherited this love of climbing from her Uncle Matt.
I had to convince Isabella that she couldn't take her clothes off to go swimming.  As I've said before she is quite the little fish.  There was water, so why not swim???
I surely love this little cutie! And I think she loves me too!
Monica had heard about another smaller waterfall so we found that one too.
Naturally we had to walk behind it since John and Bella were thirsty!
I love spending time with my family!
