Rules

I have always considered myself a rule follower.  Maybe this picture proves that assumption wrong!
George says that I am a selective rule follower.  If the rule makes sense to me I follow it.  I have a  fear of getting run over so I never jaywalk....that seems logical to me.  Taking candy into the movie theatre instead of buying the outrageously priced theatre candy....that is ok even though the signs expressly forbid it!  Going past the 'Do Not Go Beyond This Point' sign...that is fine because I really wanted the picture!

This probably goes well with my "Spiritual Crocodiles" post!  Where would I have been safest?  On the other side of the sign obviously!  Oops!

Spiritual Crocodiles

In 1976 one of our church leaders, Boyd K Packer gave a talk that has become a classic!  It is entitled "Spiritual Crocodiles.  While on a church assignment in Africa near Victoria Falls, he had a day to visit one of Africa's famous animal reserves where in his words, 'the people are put in cages and the animals are left to run free.' He goes on to describe his experience:

We stopped at a water hole to watch the animals come to drink. It was very dry that season and there was not much water, really just muddy spots. When the elephants stepped into the soft mud the water would seep into the depression and the animals would drink from the elephant tracks.
The antelope, particularly, were very nervous. They would approach the mud hole, only to turn and run away in great fright. I could see there were no lions about and asked the guide why they didn’t drink. His answer, and this is the lesson, was “Crocodiles.”
I knew he must be joking and asked him seriously, “What is the problem?” The answer again: “Crocodiles.”
“Nonsense,” I said. “There are no crocodiles out there. Anyone can see that.”
I thought he was having some fun at the expense of his foreign game expert, and finally I asked him to tell us the truth. Now I remind you that I was not uninformed. I had read many books. Besides, anyone would know that you can’t hide a crocodile in an elephant track.
He could tell I did not believe him and determined, I suppose, to teach me a lesson. We drove to another location where the car was on an embankment above the muddy hole where we could look down. “There,” he said. “See for yourself.”
I couldn’t see anything except the mud, a little water, and the nervous animals in the distance. Then all at once I saw it!—a large crocodile, settled in the mud, waiting for some unsuspecting animal to get thirsty enough to come for a drink.
Suddenly I became a believer! When he could see I was willing to listen, he continued with the lesson. “There are crocodiles all over the park,” he said, “not just in the rivers. We don’t have any water without a crocodile somewhere near it, and you’d better count on it.”
The guide was kinder to me than I deserved. My “know-it-all” challenge to his first statement, “crocodiles,” might have brought an invitation, “Well, go out and see for yourself!”I could see for myself that there were no crocodiles. I was so sure of myself I think I might have walked out just to see what was there. Such an arrogant approach could have been fatal! But he was patient enough to teach me.
My young friends, I hope you’ll be wiser in talking to your guides than I was on that occasion. That smart-aleck idea that I knew everything really wasn’t worthy of me, nor is it worthy of you. I’m not very proud of it, and I think I’d be ashamed to tell you about it except that telling you may help you.
Those ahead of you in life have probed about the water holes a bit and raise a voice of warning about crocodiles. Not just the big, gray lizards that can bite you to pieces, but spiritual crocodiles, infinitely more dangerous, and more deceptive and less visible, even, than those well-camouflaged reptiles of Africa. These spiritual crocodiles can kill or mutilate your souls. They can destroy your peace of mind and the peace of mind of those who love you. Those are the ones to be warned against, and there is hardly a watering place in all of mortality now that is not infested with them.
Our recent trip to Africa was not during a time of drought.  In fact the river was full and many animals  eager to drink.  Yet from our boat we observed a nervous group of impala.  Can you see what is lurking in the river?

Yep a crocodile!  As I reflected on this and on President Packer's talk I couldn't help but think of the differences between now and 1976.  Yes there were spiritual crocodiles then as there are now but now they hide in what appears to be 'mainstream' places.  Pornography is the perfect example of this.  While in 1976 there was pornography, you had to go in search of it and buy a book or a magazine to find it.  It didn't come unbidden into your home on TV, computers and smart phones.  Now so much that can be a dangerous 'spiritual crocodile' is considered the norm and just a part of life.  We who warn against such dangers are considered too old fashioned and too close minded and too conservative and too judgmental; we supposedly aren't tolerant! No question in my mind that we can't be tolerant of spiritual crocodiles!   Sometimes we think that we can get close to the danger yet avoid it.  Imagine the thirsty impala taking a quick sip from the river but trusting that he is fast enough and smart enough and agile enough to avoid the crocodile.  Maybe he is, but maybe not.  Definitely the safest place is far away from the danger, in the middle of the herd!

President Packer's talk goes on to give the solution for staying safe from spiritual crocodiles and that advice is every bit as timely now as it was 37 years ago.

Some of us are appointed now, as you will be soon, to be guides and rangers. Now we don’t use those titles very much. We go under the titles of parents—father and mother—bishop, leader, adviser. Our assignment is to see that you get through mortality without being injured by these spiritual crocodiles. All of the training and activity in the Church has as its central purpose a desire to see you, our young people, free and independent and secure, both spiritually and temporally.
If you will listen to the counsel of your parents and your teachers and your leaders when you are young, you can learn how to follow the best guide of all—the whisperings of the Holy Spirit. That is individual revelation. There is a process through which we can be alerted to spiritual dangers. Just as surely as that guide warned me, you can receive signals alerting you to the spiritual crocodiles that lurk ahead.
If we can train you to listen to these spiritual communications, you will be protected from these crocodiles of life. You can learn what it feels like to be guided from on high. This inspiration can come to you now, in all of your activities, in school, and dating—not just in your Church assignments.
Learn how to pray and how to receive answers to your prayers. When you pray over some things, you must patiently wait a long, long time before you will receive an answer. Some prayers, for your own safety, must be answered immediately, and some promptings will even come when you haven’t prayed at all. Once you really determine to follow that guide, your testimony will grow and you will find provisions set out along the way in unexpected places, as evidence that someone knew that you would be traveling that way.
The basic exercise for you to perform in your youth to become spiritually strong and to become independent lies in obedience to your guides. If you will follow them and do it willingly, you can learn to trust those delicate, sensitive, spiritual promptings. You will learn that they always, invariably, lead you to do that which is righteous.

Angel's Rest

One day at Girl's Camp is hiking day.  Each of the six wards is assigned a different hike.  We had a beautiful destination.  Although the trail climbed almost the entire 2.3 miles, the view from the top was worth the effort.
The view to the west down the Columbia River Gorge
The view to the east.....
Teenaged girls just have a way of making everything FUN!!!  Shadow photo and sassy poses!

Whooo went to Girl's Camp?

Happy Graduation Kristen!

Our Ward only has one girl graduating from High School this year but what a girl she is! As you can easily see she is absolutely beautiful! She and her date were the Prom Queen and King this year.

Her external beauty is only a part of her. She treats everyone, old and young, with kindness and concern. Everyone is her friend because she is just so nice! And she is crazy fun too!

Her music talents are amazing. She has perfect pitch so she sings like an angel. We don't get to hear her sing as often as we'd like to because she is usually playing the piano accompanying a soloist or the ward choir. She also plays the guitar beautifully. Her Mom bought her a plaque that says, "Music isn't what I do, it's who I am". Very appropriate!

Other words I could use to describe Kristen are sensitive and spiritual and adventurous and daring and full of life. A few times when I've been feeling kind of 'down' she has noticed and asked me if I were ok. Her comments in class and the lessons and talks she gives show a spiritual maturity beyond her years. She is a also a wild and crazy snowboarder. I'd give her an award for 'most versatile' or 'best all around'!

We'll miss her very much. Her new Ward will be lucky to have her!

Love you Kristen!

Changes

Since there is no paid ministry in our church we each have responsibilities or callings to help with the work. In my life in the church I have been called to do lots of different things - from typing a monthly newsletter to teaching Sunday School to running the nursery to being the president of the women's organization to being a cub scout leader. In Spain I taught music to the children, which is amazing since I don't really speak Spanish or sing very well. For the past 2+ years I have had the most fun calling of all as I've been President of the Young Women's organization. This program is for the teenage girls ages 12 until High School graduation. We have weekly Wednesday night activities and Sunday lessons.

Let me show you some of the things I've done to prove that this is the best calling ever!

I've been bowling with some 'sassy ladies'!

I've learned to cook Mexican food!

I've been on several 'snipe hunts'!

I've hiked to beautiful mountain lakes!
I've had an invigorating early morning swim in a very cold river!

I've learned that you never know what what new personalities might show up at camp!
I've watched girls cheerfully give service! Here they are making birthday bags for homeless children.

I've learned to make duck lips!

I've watched several thousand youth 'dance like nobodies watching"!

I've felt loved when I returned from my mother's funeral to find a 'heart attack' on my front door!

And I don't have pictures of the most important, faith promoting, testimony building activities & lessons. I've taught these girls and I've been taught by them.
Aren't my girls beautiful?

Sadly, no calling lasts forever and this last Sunday I was released and a new YW President was called. She'll be a wonderful blessing in these girls lives. I'll miss them but they are in good hands!

Each Sunday in our Young Women Opening Exercises we 'stand for truth and righteousness' and recite the YW theme which is:
We are daughters of our Heavenly Father
who loves us and we love him.
We will stand as witness of God
at all times, and in all things, and in all places
as we strive to live the Young Women values which are:
Faith
Divine Nature
Individual Worth
Knowledge
Choice and Accountability
Good Works
Integrity
and Virtue.
We believe as we come to accept and act upon these values
we will be prepared to strengthen home and family,
make and keep sacred covenants
receive the ordinances of the temple
and enjoy the blessings of exaltation.

I have been blessed by my association with these wonderful young women. They are great examples to me and to all with whom they come in contact. I am thankful for them and for all the experiences of these last 2 years and 10 months.

Young Women Mother Daughter Party

Mary came back to Boise to visit us for a week. That was wonderful. One of the fun things was that I got to take my daughter to our Young Women Mother-Daugher Party! Mary knows a lot about me. Her only Mom trivia answer that I wonder about was to the question, "How old was your Mom when she got her first kiss?" and her response, "25"!!! I explained that she was born before I was 25!!!! She had misunderstood the question and thought it was "How old was your mom when she had her first 'kid'? I guess that explains the 25 answer!

She did it again!

Remember the wonderful poster that Taylor drew last year with our Young Women's theme? http://bondia2000.blogspot.com/2009/02/so-much-talent.html

Well she did it again.

She said that she decided on this scene because no matter where we go Heavenly Father will always be with us. I especially love the light in the background. My photo doesn't capture the subtle effect of that heavenly light! All year we will be blessed to enjoy her talents as we look at this poster. We are lucky to have her in our Ward. I love her!!

A wonderful gift

Remember Kelsey? She was the wonderfully talented Young Woman who graduated from high school last year. http://bondia2000.blogspot.com/2009/05/another-amazingly-talented-young-woman.html

She brought me the best gift today....a charcoal drawing of our beloved Cirera.

Isn't it just amazing? It is difficult to get enough contrast in a drawing of an all black dog and Kelsey did it beautifully. She captured Cirera's sweet little dog face. Thanks you so, so much Kelsey. This will be framed and will be a treasure that the kids will fight over someday!

YW Christmas Tradition

Today was our 3rd annual YW Christmas Lunch. We kidnap all the girls immediately after Sunday School (with the Bishop's permission of course) and bring them over to our house for a special lesson & lunch. We listened to a beautiful guitar vocal by our only senior YW. (Boo hoo...we'll miss you Kristen!) A Dad of three of our YW did a masterful job of introducing the theme for next year which is, "Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." (Joshua 1:9) Another one of the Dads makes crepes for us each year so we get to enjoy those with ham and turkey and cheese sauce, as well as berry & banana crepes with homemade chocolate sauce & caramel sauce and lots of whipped cream! Some of the girls start with the dessert crepes! Isn't the saying, "Life is short, eat dessert first." Oh yes, we polished off a huge crock pot full of potato casserole as well. Talk about a yummy meal!

I can't tell you how much I love these girls and how much I enjoy being around them. I'm so blessed with this calling.

Day #21 - Young Women Birthdays

Our Presidency makes a memory scrapbook page for each of our YW on her birthday. The pictures are from camp so the girls almost never like the way they look but I think they are all beautiful! I hope when they look at them they'll remember the good times we have had and also the theme for the year. "Be thou an example of the believers in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12

Wasp traps

Sunday in Young Women one of the girls taught a lesson about "Resisting Sin". She did an excellent job teaching and getting everyone involved. I was still thinking about the lesson on Sunday afternoon when I was sitting out on my deck. I happened to glance at the wasp trap that we have hanging by the bird feeders. It is full of dead wasps. Those pesky little guys are attracted to the sugar water and fly right into the trap where they can indulge themselves. Then the problem comes when they can not figure out how to get out. The openings are large on the outside but get smaller and smaller as the wasp flies in.

Sin is much like the sweet water in the trap. It looks & smells so so inviting that we want to indulge ourselves. We are bombarded daily with enticements that are like the inviting smell of the sugar water to the wasps. Like the wasps, the way "in" seems so easy that we don't realize we are trapped until it is too late!

I worry sometimes that the rules we try to live by in the church are seen as restrictions instead of as safety. We might try to get as close to sin as possible never realizing the moment when we are trapped. The wasps think they are safely enjoying a wonderful sweet drink until they try to get out. Then it is too late for an easy correction. I have seen a few, a very, very few, fly back out the little tunnel but so many more lie on the bottom of the trap. Of course the beauty of the gospel is that there is always a way out....it is called repentance. But the safest and surest spot for the wasps and for us is to stay outside the traps!

I read this quote in the Ensign (our church magazine for adults) by one of the former Presidents of our church Ezra Taft Benson. " When obedience ceases to be an irritant and becomes our quest, in that moment God will endow us with power." I love that quote. I'm going to make obedience my quest!

Want to have some fun?

Take 28 girls and some leaders. Divide them into teams and have them sit at two tables in front of mystery bags of food.

The rules of this game are simple. The first girl opens her bag and can either eat what is inside or pass the food one time to the person on her right...if that person is willing to eat it! When one girl finishes and swallows, the next girl can open her bag and eat and the game continues. It is a race to see which team eats all their food first. When the last person swallows that team wins!

You can expect some funny faces!

Have plenty of water on hand!

You can learn that some people HATE marshmallows!

Don't panic when you hear your Young Women chanting, "CHUG, CHUG, CHUG!!"

Know that winning is VERY important to some people!

In fact win at any cost, even if it means cramming your mouth full of candy!
And you have evidence that some people can't stop laughing no matter what!

You also learn whose mother taught them manners! (Just kidding Kristen, Kellie & Sharlene)

And you might discover just how much rope licorice can fit in one 13 year old girl's mouth!

What a fun game for the first night of camp! I want to play it with adults at my house. Anyone want to come over?

Sisters

One fun thing at camp was all the sisters....real life sisters who live in the same house, not just sisters in Zion!!!!
These two lucky girls are step sisters who are only about 1 month apart in age and are the bestest of friends.
Amazing how alike these two are in lots of ways that we never imagined until we got them at camp together! Let's just say they are both "Whiz kids"!!!!
These three beauties come from a family of 7 girls and one boy. One Laurel, one Mia Maid, and one Beehive and 4 more future girl's campers waiting at home!
So much talent, looks and enthusiasm in this family! Their equally beautiful Mom was our camp director this year for the 2nd year in a row. I think she was too busy all week to pose for a picture! Two more future campers in this family too!

Three of the most fun people I know! Mom was our camp cook and the food was not like your typical camp food....Costa Vida pork burritos anyone? They also have two little sisters who are future campers. Mom may be the camp cook for the next 10 years!

I love watching the younger sisters follow in the footsteps of their older sisters. What great examples! I just feel so blessed to be with these girls!
